When Truth Matters…
and the bravehearts who defended it from apostasy
By Lynn Carol Bowling
ow
could and why would a congregation known as St. Andrew’s By the Sea, Destin, Florida, reach the point where they would
depart from the property of their ancestors and the handiwork of their members to be a church under the authority of a third-world
bishop?
In
When Truth Matters, the award-winning author offers insights and observations—both
hers and others, recapping a chronology of comments, documents, and events, as explanation of how and why St. Andrew’s
and other congregations moved from the Episcopal Church in the United States of America
(ECUSA) to other parts of the greater Anglican Communion.
It is perhaps a true microcosm of the 21st century’s reformation of the church, a glimpse of the raging
battlefield where loyal conservative and orthodox believers fought traditionalists, ending with the election of the first openly gay bishop of ECUSA. The Very Rev Peter C. Moore,
D.D., while dean and president of Trinity Episcopal School of Ministry said this: “Some of you will wonder how such
a state has come to pass. If you are one who thinks that way, then I suspect
that you have been ill informed by the very people who should have enlightened you to the real issues. The Episcopal Church has fought over sexuality for the past 30 years.”
When elected
in 1997, Episcopal Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold, the apostle of "pluriform truth," said, "Truth is, as the Chicago theologian
David Tracy put it, pluriform.” In 2000 Griswold said, “Since there are many truths, all personal, subjective, and in need of enlargement, perhaps there can
be many gods, all equally true.” Bowling brings first-hand evidence that
to one congregation, then, to one after another, biblical truth is not relative; truth does matter. Relative truth leads to a departure from scriptural authority, ultimately affecting the very life of the
church, as this story relates.
While the book, When
Truth Matters, specifically addresses activities within the Episcopal denomination, virtually all mainline
denominations are experiencing like problems and reactions at the turn of the millennium. Change
the names, places, and denominational faces, and you will likely observe similar battlefield stories. The author tells this particular tale in order that others may learn from history, from the moves and mistakes
of those who have already been there.

CALLED TO HIS PURPOSE is the fascinating, poignant and
often humorous personal testimony of how God redeems, blesses, and uses whom He will. The author shares a short segment of
her life to encourage and illuminate how God prepares and equips those whom He calls. It is a story of pride giving way to
humility, self-confidence submitting to trust in and obedience to God. $8.00
GO YE INTO AFRICA is drawn from the authors own experience as a medical missionary. In it she shares
the daily realities and adventures of life "in-country" as she and her husband answer the call of the Great Commission. Out
of the sweltering African plains comes a story of the Bowling's response to the biblical injunction to " . . . go ye into
all the world . . . " From the time Lynn and her husband leave the States until their return thirteen months later,
this story chronicles their experiences and trials on the mission field of Africa. Share in the excitement and challenge they
find working in a medical mission amid tropical flora and incredible panoramic scenery. From everyday dangers of African wildlife
to threats of harm from some unhappy natives, the author shares an incredible journey and commitment to the realities of living
out her faith. $10.00 ISBN 0-933451-12-1
HONOR THY FATHER AND MOTHER is a true-life account of how the author and her family
dealt with the decisions and devastations of caring for elderly parents; a narrative of hard questions, hard answers. Throughout
this intense story the author shares her loving approaches to the medical, legal, practical, and Biblical aspects of dealing
with the endless struggles and joys of the full-time caregiver. $12.00 ISBN 07880-0995-8
One reader's 5-star review of Honor Thy Father And Mother:
"A must have for anyone with aging parents!"
February 11, 2007
A must have for everyone who has aging parents, whether you are taking care of
them right now or not. I wish I had this book when my mother first had her stroke
seven years ago. I would have saved thousands of dollars, uncountable hours,
and immeasurable suffering for her and myself. It is painful enough to watch
your parents falter without suffering needlessly.
This book is full of resources from everything from hearing aides
to health care, how to know when and how you should intervene, various types of home/nursing home care, how to avoid duplication
or worse, and omission of services.
There are many books available for adult caregivers, but this is the one you absolutely
must have. The story is written with a Christian perspective, which is a real plus!
